In 1919 Curtis B. Cross, Fred and William Steusloff and A. N. Bush founded the Valley Packing Company. In 1924 an addition was made. Occupying 55 acres just west of the Southern Pacific Railway crossing on Portland Road, it was the only U.S. Inspected full-line meat processing plant in the state outside of Portland. Cascade Meats Inc.took over the plant in 1956. In 1959, the year before it closed, there were 130 employees. It is now a storage facility. Many photographs of the company’s 1933 operations can be found here.
